Case Study – From Start to Finish in 10 months – A New Vaccine Facility
Session DescriptionIn June 2020, the Canadian Government decided to build a new facility to produce COVID-19 vaccines for the Canadian population. From July 2020 to May 2021, a new biotech facility was designed and built in Montreal by the NRC. The presentation will discuss the process used to build a 53,000 sq.ft. grass root facility ready for qualification. The presentation will focus on the team spirit, the challenges and the issues encountered during the 10 months. It will be illustrated by real examples of the challenges the team had to face and how it was resolved.

Biomanufacturing in Canada, 2017-2021
Session DescriptionEnd 2016 and beginning 2017, a series of workshops with industry stakeholders and academia took place in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver, to discuss Biomanufacturing in Canada. To prepare for these workshops the status of Biologics and Biomanufacturing in Canada was analysed. An update to this analysis will be presented.
The updated analysis takes the conclusions of the workshops into consideration. It shows the updated Canadian pipeline of biologics and will supply additional detail regarding the regional distribution. While the 2017 analysis was mainly focused on mammalian-cell expression of recombinant proteins (monoclonal antibodies), the current presentation will also look into what other types of biologics the Canadian pipeline is made up. We will provide an overview of the current Canadian biomanufacturing sector and its recent developments while taking the different types of biologics into consideration. Furthermore, the increasing need for highly qualified personnel will be explored.
The presentation will show that an upward trend of Biologics and the COVID-19 pandemic have created unprecedented demand for Biomanufacturing. Furthermore, as a reaction to weaknesses that the race for COVID-19 vaccine procurement has exposed, several investments – mainly from government sources – have been made in the biomanufacturing sector.
It remains to be seen if these efforts will be sufficient to meet the existing and future demand and the challenge of adaptability.

Panel Discussion: Challenges and solutions with building biomanufacturing infrastructure in Canada?
Session DescriptionThe Canadian Government and the private sector biotech companies have made significant investments to strengthen Canada’s biomanufacturing footprint. Roughly $3 billion is committed to building biomanufacturing infrastructure, creating over 2,000 highly skilled new jobs in Canada.
This investment ensures that Canada has sufficient capacity to produce life-saving vaccines and other critical biologic therapies, provides enormous economic benefits associated with growing manufacturing capacity, attracts vaccine developers, and connects Canada’s world-leading life science researchers and start-ups with opportunities to grow and succeed in Canada.
Construction of production capacity is in progress from western to eastern Canada. However, along with exciting opportunities for the supply chain in the life-science sector come challenges.
In addition to biomanufacturing capacity, how do we ensure that Canada has the talent, robust SMEs, and security across the supply chain to support the dynamic and growing biomanufacturing and innovation ecosystem in the long term?
This panel discussion, consisting of representatives from biotech companies that are building biomanufacturing capacity, will address the challenges, opportunities, and innovative solutions they have implemented.
